What We Discovered
The Alaska School Activities Association Handbook permits high school student-athletes to receive compensation for their name, image and likeness if there is no school team, school, ASAA Region or ASAA affiliation. A student-athlete must continue to abide by all other amateurism and eligibility requirements set forth by the ASAA. There is also no law governing collegiate athletics, therefore, all collegiate athletes must adhere to the guidelines set forth by their National Collegiate Association (NCAA, NJCAA, NAIA, etc.) To see NCAA, NJCAA, and NAIA guidelines, click here.

Alaska has not passed NIL legislation. College student-athletes can monetize their NIL in accordance with the NIL policies and procedures of their institution, conference, and national collegiate association (i.e. NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA). The NCAA has changed their guidelines as of October 26, 2022. Anything NIL related after 10/26/22 will refer to the new guidelines.

Excerpt |Article 8 Section 1 Amateurism Bylaw Amendments
A student-athlete who represents a member school in an interscholastic sport shall be an amateur in that sport. An amateur athlete is one who engages in athletic competition solely for the physical, mental, social and pleasure benefits derived therefrom. This rule may be waived for students participating as members of official United States Olympic Teams.
A student-athlete forfeits amateur status and eligibility in a sport sanctioned by the Association by:
Capitalizing on athletic fame by receiving money or gifts of monetary value in exchange for endorsements, participation in commercials, advertisements or the like in affiliation with the student’s school team, school, ASAA Region or ASAA (scholarships paid directly to institutions of higher learning are specifically exempted). This provision is not intended to restrict the right of any student to participate in a commercial endorsement provided there is no school team, school, ASAA Region or ASAA affiliation.
