College athletes would need school approval for NIL deals under bill passed by Utah Legislature

College athletes in Utah who are looking to profit off their name, image and likeness will have to seek written approval from their schools for any business deal exceeding $600 under a bill that received final legislative approval in the state Senate on Friday.
The policy giving Utah universities more control over student-athletes’ marketing partnerships, known as NIL deals, passed by a 21-7 vote on the final day of the 2024 legislative session after the House approved it last month with little opposition.
Under the measure, universities will be required to provide written acknowledgment on whether an NIL deal conflicts with the school’s policies or the standards outlined in the bill.
