Zach Edey losing out on NIL opportunities due to international status
Purdue C Zach Edey is “losing out on significant NIL money” as he is Canadian and thus by law “unable to earn any NIL money in the U.S.,” according to Adam Zagoria of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. International students are not “allowed to earn NIL income” as they “cannot be paid to work while on a student visa.” The same situation “applied two years ago” to current Pacers C Oscar Tshiebwe, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo and was named National Player of the Year when he was at the Univ. of Kentucky. On Friday, NIL company Daps partnered with Edey, dropping the release of 150 Edey trading cards that “fans can bid on.” The partnership is within NIL rules because it is “entirely passive income.” Edey is not “‘working’ in any capacity.” He also is not “promoting it or signing anything (the cards are all unsigned)” and the picture Daps used for the Instagram post “was taken in December” when Edey was in Toronto for Purdue’s game against Alabama. Edey said when he is back in Toronto, he will “try to do some stuff.” Edey: “Obviously, I can still do jersey sales and stuff while I’m here, that passive income stuff. It’s not like I can go film a commercial in West Lafayette. … I understand kind of the legal process, it takes a while. It’s not like it’s an NCAA rule, it’s an American law. Anytime you try to go change that, I understand it takes a while”
